“Thank you for helping me and making me feel happy.”

Eco-Schools is a pupil-led environmental education programme. Children follow a ‘Seven-Step framework’ that involves hands-on learning and gets the whole school and the wider community involved in environmental projects. It empowers children to drive change by improving their environment at school and their environmental awareness.

Oakridge School is in its first year of working towards achieving the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award. The children have formed an Eco Committee with representatives from each year, who meet at least every term and feed back to the rest of the school in class and eco assemblies.

Having completed their environmental review of the school in September the children have chosen the three topics they would like to focus on. Their action plan, which is to raise awareness of energy and water saving opportunities at school, starts this November. The children will be taking part in ‘switch off fortnight’ and will have a visit from Severn Trent Water. Learning about the importance of reduce, reuse, recycle to improve recycling at school is their third topic and will get started in the new year.

An eco board, in the front school lobby, is kept up to date with Oakridge’s progress toward becoming an Eco-School. Feedback is always welcome.
