Class 2 Topic Update

I expect that you have heard from your children that we have a new topic.

Dear Parents,

Happy new year to you all!

I expect that you have heard by now from your children that we have a new topic, ‘Bright Sparks.’’ This will of course be woven across the curriculum in some form to make learning interesting and enjoyable.  Here is a snippet of what we are doing.

As usual, the inspiration has come from the children and then I have linked their ideas to the national curriculum.  Because of this, I have been able to plan some memorable experiences for the term.

The week started with a set of kitchen utensils (some older than me!) and a look at Leonardo Da Vinci and his early flying machine drawings. We decided to try our hand at being inventors and create our own inventions. Using our imaginations and carbon paper as a medium for printing the children were able to produce prints of their designs. Finally, they had to label and present their ideas to the class. We have some budding inventors in our midst!

DT and science will be a big focus this term as we will be designing and making mini robots using Hexbugs as our stimulus. Product analysis, concept modelling of ideas as well as using nature will be used to help with our designs. In science ‘Electricity’ will be our focus and we will be exploring circuits with some of us using of skills in our DT designs. ICT already seems to be taking an exciting turn as we venture into the realms of programming. Watch this space!

In English we are reading ‘The Man Who Walked Between The Towers.’ Based on the true story of a tight – rope artist, Philippe Petit, it recounts how, on an August morning in 1974, he walked, lay, knelt and danced on a tightrope wire between the roofs of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, a quarter mile above the ground. It will form the basis of our writing this term.

Finally, does anyone have any programming and/or CAD experience and would be willing to come into school and share their knowledge with the children? Please see me if you can help.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Rachael Modaley
